The New Museum officially opened its OMA-designed building expansion in March 2026, significantly augmenting its footprint at 235 Bowery in New York City. The expansion introduces additional gallery spaces and facilities, enhancing the institution's capacity for exhibitions and public engagement. Cooper Robertson collaborated on the architectural design of the new structure.
The inaugural exhibition, 'New Humans: Memories of the Future,' commenced with an opening weekend on March 21 and 22, 2026. This exhibition explores various facets of human evolution and technological impact through a diverse selection of works. Featured artists include Sophia Al-Maria, Pierre Huyghe, Hito Steyerl, Wangechi Mutu, Ian Cheng, and Sarah Lucas, alongside historical figures such as Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí, H.R. Giger, and Hannah Höch. The show integrates contemporary art with historical pieces across painting, sculpture, photography, film, digital art, and installation.
Concurrent with the expansion, the New Museum has broadened its array of public programs and educational offerings, designed to deepen engagement with contemporary art and design. These initiatives are scheduled to run throughout Spring 2026, with specific events planned for the first Sunday of every month and Thursday evenings, aiming to foster experimentation and innovation within the art community.
