National Gallery of Art Announces Printmaking, American Design, and Photography Exhibitions

The National Gallery of Art has outlined its upcoming exhibition schedule, featuring significant presentations on printmaking techniques and American design history, set to open between late 2026 and early 2027. These additions complement a series of current exhibitions focusing on photography and impressionism, which will conclude in August 2026.

Among the new exhibitions is "Tinker Tinker: Printmakers at Work," running from December 19, 2026, to June 13, 2027. This exhibition will explore the creative process of printmaking through works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacques Villon, Leonardo Drew, Jasper Johns, Henri Matisse, and Edvard Munch. The presentation will include prints and preparatory drawings, highlighting various mediums including etchings, woodcuts, and lithographs, with a focus on the Crownpoint Press legacy.

The Gallery will also present two exhibitions centered on American design. "Women and the Index of American Design," from January 16 to June 6, 2027, will be installed in the East Building. Simultaneously, "In the Library: Reimagining America by Design" is scheduled to open on August 31, 2026, in the West Building. These exhibitions will feature watercolors, embroideries, and quilt designs, drawing from the Federal Art Project's Index of American Design and including the work of Carmel Wilson.

Concluding in August 2026 are several exhibitions, including "Beneath the Surface: Mining and American Photography" which closes on August 23, and "In the Library: Photobooks and American Energy" closing on August 22. "Mary Cassatt: An American in Paris," an exhibition of impressionist works, will conclude on August 30.
