The Museum of Sonoma County has announced an upcoming exhibition, "Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Running Fence at 50 Years," set to open on June 27th, 2026, and run through November 8th, 2026. The exhibition will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's large-scale environmental artwork, 'Running Fence', which was installed across the Sonoma and Marin counties in California in 1976.

'Running Fence', a temporary installation consisting of 24.5 miles of white nylon fabric suspended from steel cables, remains one of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's most recognized projects. Its realization involved extensive negotiations, engineering, and community engagement, characteristic of the duo's approach to their site-specific artworks.

The celebratory exhibition at the Museum of Sonoma County will delve into the project's development and execution through a range of materials. Visitors can expect to see preparatory drawings, collages, scale models, and extensive photography that documented the installation and its impact. This presentation aims to provide insight into the complexities of the work, from initial concept to its public reception.

The exhibition is organized by the Museum of Sonoma County and supported by the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation. It will highlight the conceptual and physical aspects of the installation art, utilizing the diverse mediums through which the artists articulated their vision.
