Matthew Wong, The Recluse (2017), sold for $1.81m (HKD14.19m), more than two and a half times the low estimate at Phillips in Hong Kong on June 2.

The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $1.1m, equivalent to an annualized return of 20%. It last sold at auction in 2021 for $708,000 at Sotheby's.

Oil on canvas, 61.0 x 50.8cm. The work has been traded twice in the past.
