MASP Decolonizes the Art of the Latin Americas

MASP presents Histórias Latino-Americanas, an international group exhibition featuring work by 148 artists that aims to rewrite the canon of art from across the region and place it within a decolonial framework.

The major exhibition will fill five floors of MASP’s new Pietro Maria Bardi building. Organized into five sections, it explores how the idea of Latin America was created and contested over time. Beginning with the violence of colonization, the exhibition examines the role of Baroque art and the invention of the tropical paradise as visual regimes that spread colonial power.

Curator Amanda Carneiro highlights the region’s interconnectedness due to: “multiple historical processes, such as colonial invasion, the genocide of populations, the legacy of European colonialism, and US imperialism”.

Latin American Histories opens on September 9 and runs through January 31, 2027.
