Marlow Moss, White, Black, Blue and Red (1944) sold for $828,100 (£609,600), more than three times the low estimate at Sotheby's in London on June 24.
The oil on canvas and wood relief work has been traded 4 times in the past.
Marlow Moss (1889–1958) was a pioneering Constructivist painter and sculptor. Born in London, Marjorie Jewel Moss moved to Paris where she lived as a queer and androgenous artist under the name "Marlow".
She became a leading member of the Abstraction‑Création association. Inspired by Piet Mondrian, she created innovative “double‑line” geometric abstract works. Moss first met Mondrian through her longtime partner and lover, the writer Antoinette "Nettie" Hendrika Nijhoff-Wind.
Like Mondrian, Moss was forced to flee Paris ahead of the Nazi invasion. She was Jewish, created White, Black, Blue and Red (1944) when living in Cornwall in the West of England and gave it to her partner Nettie.

The sale beat Moss’s previous auction record by $402,500, a 94% rise. Her previous record was set by White and Black (1948), which sold for $425,600 at Christie's on October 19, 2022. The work had been traded once in the past.
