Mark Tansey, The Myth of Depth (1984) sold for $4.69m, more than one and a half times the low estimate at Sotheby's in New York on November 18.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $4.47m, equivalent to an annualized return of 9%. It last sold at auction in 1992 for $220,000 at Christie's.
