Madge Tennent, The Red Holokū (1940) sold for $231,600, more than one and a half times the low estimate at Bonhams in Los Angeles on July 15. The oil on canvas work has been traded twice in the past.
The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $78,700, a 51% rise.
