Lucian Freud, A Young Painter (1957), sold for $9.61m (GBP7.17m), more than one and a half times the low estimate at Sotheby's in London on March 4.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $9.6m, equivalent to an annualized return of 13%. It last sold at auction in 1975 for $12,100 at Christie's.
