Frankfurt am Main – The Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung has announced an upcoming exhibition, "Athena, the Stage is Yours: The Parthenon Puzzle," set to open on November 18, 2026, and run through July 25, 2027. This presentation will focus on recent archaeological research concerning the Parthenon's east pediment sculptures, offering new perspectives on one of antiquity's most studied monuments.
The exhibition will unveil what the museum describes as spectacular new findings derived from years of dedicated research. These investigations have culminated in a decisive breakthrough regarding the reconstruction of the Parthenon's east pediment, challenging long-held assumptions and providing a refined understanding of the sculptural program.
The research, involving key institutions such as the British Museum and the Acropolis Museum, and figures like Vinzenz Brinkmann, delves into ancient Greek art and sculpture through the lens of modern archaeology and reconstruction techniques. The institution's director, Philipp Demandt, commented on the significance of these developments. Philipp Demandt, Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung, Director, said: "The new findings fundamentally alter our view of one of antiquity’s most famous monuments..."
The exhibition is anticipated to attract significant attention from the international art and archaeological community, offering a detailed exploration of the Parthenon's iconography and construction. It aims to showcase the dynamic nature of contemporary archaeological inquiry and its capacity to reinterpret historical narratives.
