The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will inaugurate the David Geffen Galleries, designed by Peter Zumthor, on April 19. Located in Hancock Park, the new facility is set to house a significant portion of the museum’s global art collection.
The inaugural installations in the David Geffen Galleries will feature a new vision for presenting LACMA’s collection, focusing on artistic exchanges and cultural connections. The exhibition narrative aims to transcend traditional art historical categorizations, highlighting relationships across diverse geographies and time periods. Works encompassing sculpture, photography, textiles, ceramics, paintings, decorative arts, design, and printmaking will be on display.
Featured artists in the initial presentations include Chris Burden, Todd Gray, Do Ho Suh, Lauren Halsey, Tavares Strachan, Sarah Rosalena, Mariana Castillo Deball, Pedro Reyes, Diana Thater, Shio Kusaka, Jeff Koons, Tony Smith, Alexander Calder, Auguste Rodin, and Liz Glynn. The displays will integrate both contemporary and historical works.
Accompanying the galleries' opening, the East West Bank Commons and the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Garden will also become accessible on April 19. The W.M. Keck Education Center is scheduled to open on May 3, further expanding the museum's public offerings. The The Genesis Talks program is slated for April 22, with a Block Party planned for June 20, and the opening of new restaurant, theater, and wine bar facilities in the fall.
