John Cecil Stephenson, Painting I (1937) sold for $62,800 (GBP47,000), more than two and a half times the low estimate at Christie's in London on March 19. The tempera on canvas stretched over panel work has been traded twice in the past.
The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $1,429, a 2% rise.
