Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Julius Caesar; Sketch of the portrait of Julius Caesar inserted in an architectural structure; Sketch of the bust portrait of Julius Caesar (1864) sold for $2.71m (EUR2.36m), more than two and a half times the low estimate at Christie's in Paris on September 23. The oil on canvas laid down on cardboard; graphite on two sheets of varnished tracing paper; graphite work has not been traded before.
The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $58,100, a 2% rise.
