Howard Hodgkin, In the Green Room (1984), sold for $1.69m (GBP1.27m), more than one and a half times the low estimate at Christie's in London on March 5.
The sale was below the previous auction result by $138,100, realizing a 7% negative return. It last sold at auction in 2015 for $1.83m at Christie's.
