George Gower, Portrait of Sir Edward Monins of Waldershare, three-quarter-length, in a black and gold striped doublet and plumed cap (Undated) sold for $1.53m (GBP1.11m), more than five and a half times the low estimate at Bonhams in London on July 2. The oil on panel work has not been traded before.
The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $1.42m, a 1300% rise.
