Georg Baselitz – Eroi d’Oro, an exhibition featuring new large-scale paintings by the renowned artist Georg Baselitz, is scheduled to open at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice. The exhibition will be on view from 5 May to 27 September 2026, with an opening and press conference slated for Tuesday, 5 May 2026. This presentation coincides with the 61st Venice Biennale.
The exhibition will showcase new works characterized by Baselitz's exploration of painting, specifically focusing on large-scale compositions. Key themes include the use of gold grounds, figures, and impasto colour, drawing parallels to medieval icons and gilded backgrounds reminiscent of the Northern Renaissance. The works will engage with motifs such as line drawing, self-portraits, and nude drawing.
Baselitz's distinct approach to oil paint and brushwork, influenced by elements like Japanese calligraphy and executed with a palette knife, will be central to the exhibition. The project involves collaboration with Thaddaeus Ropac, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and curatorial input from Luca Massimo Barbero, with Stefan Altenburger noted among the key entities involved.
