Gagosian has announced opening of its new ground-floor space at 980 Madison Avenue on April 25. The inaugural exhibition will feature a presentation of Marcel Duchamp's readymades, running until June 27.
The exhibition includes works Duchamp produced in 1964 with the help of Italian gallerist Arturo Schwarz, as many of the originals had been lost or destroyed, such as Roue de bicyclette (Bicycle Wheel) (1964, after 1913 original).
Larry Gagosian said in a statement: “It all started with Duchamp, I couldn’t imagine a better artist or a more critical body of work to be the first exhibited in our new gallery at 980 Madison, a building he showed in just over 60 years ago.”
The French artist's radical recontextualization of everyday objects challenged conventional aesthetics and the definition of art and so showed the way for conceptual artists who followed.
