Gagosian London to Open 'This Is Still Not a Pipe: The Afterlife of Magritte'

Gagosian London has announced an upcoming exhibition, "This Is Still Not a Pipe: The Afterlife of Magritte," focusing on René Magritte's lasting impact on contemporary art. The exhibition is scheduled to open on September 24, 2026, at the gallery's Grosvenor Hill location, with the display running until December 12, 2026.

The exhibition will feature a selection of Magritte's own works, encompassing painting, works on paper, sculpture, photography, and gouache. These pieces will be presented alongside works by artists whose practice demonstrates a clear lineage from Magritte's conceptual approach, including John Baldessari.

"This Is Still Not a Pipe" aims to explore Magritte's foundational contributions to visual culture and art history, particularly his engagement with paradox, introspection, and the relationship between image and text. His surrealist investigations into the nature of representation continue to inform contemporary discourse. René Magritte once stated, "The meditations of an absent-minded, obsessive philosopher may conjure up the image of a mental world closed in upon itself..." The exhibition seeks to trace these dialogues across generations of artists.
