Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, 'The Private Academy' (1776) sold for $721,300 (EUR622,300), more than four times the low estimate at Christie's in Paris on March 25. The graphite, black chalk, red chalk, red chalk wash, brush, brown wash, watercolor work has not been traded before.
The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $246,700, a 51% rise.
The previous record was set by La recompense du poete (1759), which sold for $474,600 at Audap-Solanet Godeau-Veillet on December 04, 1986.
