Elizabeth Peyton, Liam + Noel (Gallagher) (1996) sold for $2.71m (£1.99m), more than the low estimate at Sotheby's in London on June 24. The oil on panel work has been traded 3 times in the past.

Peyton created her portrait of the brothers when their band, Oasis, was at the top of the British charts. She based the double portrait on a promotional image by the photographer Stefan De Batselier.

It is one of two paintings by Peyton of the Gallagher brothers. The other is in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Peyton (born 1965) first came to prominence in the 1990s with her stylized paintings of celebrities, friends and historical personalities.
