Ed Ruscha, That Was Then This Is Now (1989) sold for $7.79m, more than the low estimate at Sotheby's in New York on May 15.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $6.62m, equivalent to an annualized return of 12%. It last sold at auction in 2009 for $1.18m at Phillips de Pury.
