The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead will present 'Chitra Ganesh: Journey to the Great Below,' the artist's first major solo exhibition in a UK institution. The exhibition is set to open on 4 July 2026 and will run through 17 January 2027.
The exhibition will feature a significant body of new work, including an original animation, sculptural installations, and a site-specific wall drawing commissioned for the space. These new pieces will be contextualized alongside existing works that span painting, prints, mixed media, collage, and installations.
Ganesh's practice often reinterprets epic myths and historical narratives through a contemporary lens, addressing themes of psychic transformation, sexuality, power, and utopian possibilities. Her work draws from a wide array of sources, including literature, semiotics, social theory, surrealism, science fiction, anime, and South Asian visual culture, frequently centering queer and femme protagonists.
Her works are held in notable institutional collections globally, including The British Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. 'Journey to the Great Below' is supported by the Bagri Foundation, the Bukhman Foundation, and the Henry Moore Foundation.
