Charleston has organized an exhibition in its Lewes space dedicated to the painter, sculptor and designer Gladys Hynes. The exhibition will run from May 2 until October 11.
Hynes (1889-1958) was a modernist artist whose career spanned painting, sculpture, and design. Associated with various avant-garde circles including the Newlyn School, Omega Workshop, the Bloomsbury Group, and Vorticism, her work frequently engaged with feminist and pacifist themes, often reflecting her perspective as an Irish Republican.
The exhibition will include anti-war paintings, illustrations, and portraits. It aims to contextualise her surrealist style and allegorical works within the broader movements of modernism, highlighting her interactions with contemporaries such as Jacob Epstein and Vanessa Bell.
Curator Sacha Llewellyn noted: “Hynes exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy and the Venice Biennale, yet never had a solo exhibition in her lifetime."
