The National Portrait Gallery in London today, Tuesday 3 March 2026, announced the unveiling of a new photographic portrait by American artist Catherine Opie. The commissioned work depicts Sir Elton John, David Furnish, and their family, and is now on display in Room 30, the Mary Weston Gallery.

This commission by the National Portrait Gallery aligns with Opie's ongoing exhibition, 'To Be Seen', which is also currently presented at the institution. Opie, known for her contributions to contemporary photography and portraiture, focuses on themes of identity and community in her practice.

The acquisition contributes to the gallery's collection of contemporary art, integrating a significant work that addresses modern family structures and the intersection of public and private life within the context of LGBTQ+ representation.
