Carlo Maratti Work Sells for $45,300 But Delivers a 16% Negative Return

Carlo Maratti, Study of a woman seen in profile, head and shoulders, and a separate study of her left arm with a slight indication of its upper contour studied at the top, her hand holding a cloth sold for $45,300 (GBP33,000), more than one and a half times the low estimate at Sotheby's in London on July 2.

The sale was below the previous auction result by $8,803, realizing a 16% negative return. It last sold at auction in 2008 for $54,100 at Christie's.

Red chalk heightened with white chalk on blue paper, 38.8 x 28.0cm. The work has been traded 5 times in the past.
