Auguste Toulmouche, Vanity (1889) sold for $121,300 (£88,900), more than four and a half times the low estimate at Sotheby's in London on July 3. The oil on canvas work has been traded once in the past.

Auguste Toulmouche (1829–1890) was a French painter best known for elegant genre scenes depicting fashionable Parisian women.

The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $21,300, a 21% rise. The previous record was set by An afternoon idyll (1874), which sold for $100,000 at Christie's on April 19, 2005.
