Auguste Toulmouche (1829–1890) was a French painter best known for elegant genre scenes depicting fashionable Parisian women.

The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $21,300, a 21% rise. The previous record was set by An afternoon idyll (1874), which sold for $100,000 at Christie's on April 19, 2005.
