Art Institute of Chicago Announces 'Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism'

The Art Institute of Chicago has announced an upcoming exhibition, Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism, slated to open on September 6, 2026, and conclude on January 3, 2027. The exhibition will examine a significant phase in Cassatt's artistic output, focusing on works created from the late 1880s through the early 1900s.

This presentation will explore Cassatt's contributions to modernism, particularly her engagement with women's lives as subject matter, her experiments in mural painting, and the influence of Japanese woodcuts on her avant-garde expression. The exhibition will feature works across various mediums, including painting, printmaking, and color prints.

Annelise K. Madsen, Gilda and Henry Buchbinder Curator, Arts of the Americas at the Art Institute of Chicago, said: "I hope visitors will gain an understanding of Cassatt’s incredible finesse as a painter and a printmaker, and also recognize that her enduring investigation of women’s lives was, in itself, a daring move."

Key figures involved in the exhibition's development include Gillian Marcus and Nicole R. Myers from the Dallas Museum of Art, with research also drawing upon resources from the Newberry Library.
