The Art Institute of Chicago has drawn on its rich collection to present a sprawling survey of abstraction from the 1940s through the 1970s, featuring works by a diverse range of artists from more than 23 countries.

Beyond Form: Abstraction at Midcentury, on view through October 19, explores how artists moving across the globe—whether displaced by political upheaval or relocating voluntarily to pursue their careers—formed groups to develop innovative techniques, exchange ideas, and reshape the language of abstraction.

Other shows on this summer through the fall include Lee Miller: Fearless, focusing on photography, a Mary Cassatt exhibition and Willem de Kooning's drawings.

Solo shows of Jill Mulleady, Beatriz González and Abigail Lucien will also take place this year.
