Art Explora and English Heritage Launch Youth Competition Alongside Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition

Art Explora and English Heritage have launched Beyond the Battle, a national textile competition for children, inviting participants to design a missing section of the Bayeux Tapestry.

The initiative coincides with the return and exhibition of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum. The nearly 1,000-year-old textile, depicting the 1066 Norman Conquest, will be on display from September 10, 2026–July 11, 2027. Initial tickets for the exhibition are reportedly sold out.

The competition aims to engage young audiences with art history and traditional craft. Jemima Montagu, Director of Art Explora UK, stated, "The Bayeux Tapestry is storytelling in thread – a thousand-year-old narrative built stitch by stitch, made when people read pictures rather than words. Beyond the Battle lets children discover that craft for themselves: exploring the history, learning the embroiderers’ techniques, then telling a story of their own. That is Art Explora’s mission in miniature – to ignite curiosity, create together, and connect people across time and borders."

Participants, primarily Key Stage Two primary school children, are tasked with imagining and designing a piece to complete the tapestry, which is believed to be either unfinished or to have lost its final section. This educational endeavor fosters an understanding of historical narratives and textile artistry among a new generation.
