Fears that Art Basel Paris might be forced to close early have become a reality.
Friday, the first public day, will be the final day of the 2026 event, which opened to VIP collectors on Tuesday despite last weekend’s riots in the French capital and across the country.
The danger to visitors, dealers, and the millions of dollars’ worth of art inside the Grand Palais proved too great.
A letter to VIP collectors, co-signed by Art Basel global director Vincenzo de Bellis and fair director Karim Crippa, said: “This decision has not been taken lightly, and the safety of everyone involved in the fair remains our utmost priority.”
