Andy Warhol, Wayne Gretzky (1983), sold for $1.37m, more than one and a half times the low estimate at Christie's in New York on May 21.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $1.05m, equivalent to an annualized return of 7%. It last sold at auction in 2007 for $325,000 at Sotheby's.
