Warhol's Sixteen Jackies Sells for $16.23m But Delivers a 37% Negative Return

Warhol's assistant Gerard Malanga recalled the artist seemed indifferent to the US President’s assination but John Giorno remembered watching TV coverage of the shooting and crying “great big crocodile tears while Andy said over and over again ‘I don’t know what it means.’”
Andy Warhol, Sixteen Jackies (1964), sold for $16.23m, more than the low estimate at Phillips in New York on May 19.
The sale was below the previous auction result by $9.71m, realizing a 37% negative return. It last sold at auction in 2023 for $25.94m at Christie's.
Silkscreen ink on linen, in 16 parts, 203.8 x 162.9cm. The work has been traded 10 times in the past.
