Andy Warhol, Madonna and Self-Portrait with Skeleton's Arm (After Munch) (1984) sold for $3.87m (GBP2.85m), more than one and a half times the low estimate at Sotheby's in London on September 17.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $3.77m, equivalent to an annualized return of 13%. It last sold at auction in 1997 for $100,000 at Christie's.
Acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas, 129.7 x 180.4cm. The work has been traded twice in the past.
