About House of Music

The House of Music prints were created after original works from Doig’s current exhibition at Serpentine, which explores the relationship between his art and music. In some works, a stack of speakers towers over a Trinidadian landscape while another features the calypso and soca performer Winston ‘Shadow’ Bailey. Wearing his signature dark cloak emblazoned with a ghostly skeleton, and his guitar strung across his back, he looks out towards the sea and the distant lighthouse. Shadow’s lyrics for his song ‘Dat Soca Boat’ inspired the Serpentine exhibition title, House of Music.

Musicians are seen elsewhere in the House of Music works, including playing in the distance, behind a roaming lion. Speaking on the role of music in his work, Doig said, “Music has often influenced my paintings. Songs can be very visual. I’m interested in what they conjure, and I’ve tried over the years to make paintings that are imagistic and atmospheric in the way music can be.”

The lions at the centre of four of the prints have reappeared in Doig’s work for over a decade and were inspired by photographs he took of the animals in Port of Spain, where he once lived. The motif also references the Lion of Judah, a Rastafarian symbol of pride, resistance and spiritual force. It’s an image that Doig has described as ‘Christ-like’ in its prominence, but also one that is ubiquitous in popular culture, seen in wall paintings across the streets of Port of Spain.

Peter Doig

Peter Doig is renowned for his visionary paintings, prints and works on paper that transform ordinary moments from life into captivating compositions rich in colour. Doig’s artistic voice has always been distinct thanks to his highly representational and filmic style. His practice is in constant conversation with his itinerant lifestyle, moving between places like Trinidad, Canada and Britain, resulting in images with suggestive narratives that are deeply embedded in the artist’s sense of place.

Doig’s art blends real and imagined elements, portraying both everyday scenes and somewhat fantastical visions with a dream-like quality. His works, which encompass diverse subjects and locations, continue to be thoughtful reflections on the everyday that invite viewers to take a second look and reconsider what we classify as mundane.
