HENI is delighted to release Heirloom, a tapestry by acclaimed artist and social historian Nicola Green. Heirloom marks the debut of Green's iconic fist motif in tapestry form. The piece focuses on the raised fist as an enduring global symbol of strength and solidarity. The artwork and its title refer to the value of what we pass down across generations, including our individual and collective struggles and shared spirit of “we shall overcome”.
Heirloom is a Jacquard Woven Tapestry with 24k gold thread, made in an edition of 8 (plus 2 APs). Each tapestry measures 260 x 190 cm and is numbered and hand-signed by the artist on the label.
The artworks are available exclusively by application on HENI Editions from 15 May until 26 May at 17:00 BST.
This release has ended but it may be possible to buy/sell from other collectors on the secondary market.
Heirloom is a timeless tribute to our individual and collective strength and the legacies we carry forward. Heirloom focuses on the raised fist motif as an enduring global symbol of solidarity, evoking the efforts of diverse global revolutionary movements that have used it, from Mandela's Amandla, to anti-fascists, to feminist groups through history.
The artwork and its title refer to the value of what we pass down across generations, including our individual and collective struggles and shared spirit of “we shall overcome”. For Green, the raised fist is an important heirloom: it embodies her interest in legacy, what we leave behind for the next generation, and her determination as an artist to document important events for the future. The raised fist has been passed down through time, as one movement opens the door for the next; it is a symbol of our individual power and how each of us can harness it, starting within our own bodies.
Nicola Green is a British artist and social historian who works at the intersection of contemporary visual storytelling and traditional portraiture. She is celebrated for her unique perspective that offers profound insights into the dynamics of legacy and representation, and how visual language can spark change. Green gained global recognition for her project In Seven Days... hailed by The Metropolitan Museum of Art as “an artistic and historic masterpiece”. For her project, Encounters, she depicted religious figures such as Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Green co-founded and directed the Diaspora Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale and founded the Khadija Saye Arts programme at IntoUniversity. Her work can be found in public collections, including The Obama Presidential Center, The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
"As a white mother to mixed-heritage children, I have thought deeply about how my family experiences the world in ways that differ from my own. For the last twenty years I have dedicated my practice to witnessing pivotal moments and documenting them for future generations around the world. I have created work that visually explores our individual and collective stories. I believe art has a unique capacity to speak beyond words."
