Damien Hirst’s ‘Enter the Infinite – Glory' is a transfixing, vibrant and entirely joyful tapestry produced after an original ‘Spin Painting’ from 2008. The original’s aesthetic of randomness is juxtaposed with the present mathematical process of division, reflection and repetition to create a visually arresting work. 

Hirst’s tapestry takes the eye on a complicated journey into and out of the image’s central point. Emanating from its centre is a cross shape rendered in alternating thicknesses and colours of red, green, yellow and blue, surrounded by a field of green and white. The eye attempts to follow these patterns of colour but cannot contain the shifting perspectives of motion, inviting viewers to reflect on the limits and functions of the human eye. This effect is further emphasised through the artwork’s medium: the booming colours of the ‘Enter the Infinite – Glory’ tapestry are produced using a small selection of colours which the eye optically blends.  

The present work arrests the eye through intense motion, recollective of the spinning technology used to produce the original painting and the mechanised jacquard-weaving process used to generate the tapestry. Translating the painting into a new form and composition, ‘Enter the Infinite – Glory’ expands and emphasises the dynamic motion of the original work.
