‘Enter the Infinite – Exaltation’, a tapestry by Damien Hirst, divides an original ‘Spin Painting’ from 2008 into an entrancing cross shape. As it emanates outward from the centre of the artwork, the cross turns and alternates in yellow, green, red, blue and white, the product of precisely dividing, repeating and reflecting the original painting. The composition prompts a complicated journey through the visual field as the eye is led quickly into and out of the work’s centre. These shifting inward and outward perspectives are difficult for the eye to follow, revealing its limitations and functions.
