In the stained glass folding screen ‘Night Orchids’ (G2-24, 2018), Brian Clarke reproduced the flowers in striking white shapes over a dark background. Interposed with bright red and blue squares, the artist appropriates these flowers to interrogate notions of beauty and explore the void in which life blooms. The stark contrasts of light and dark, colour and emptiness are echoed in the dynamism of the panel’s composition, which juxtaposes geometric lines and bulbous organic forms.
