In his stained glass folding screen ‘Grief’ (G2-19, 2018) Brian Clarke forcefully confronts viewers with intense scenes of human suffering. Each of the twelve sections displays a male face, outlined with thin, pencil-like white marks over a deep red background. With screaming mouths, tear-filled eyes and expressive hand gestures, these figures capture a sense of unrestrained human emotion. While the face in the top right section seems covered in white streams in an abstract representation of weeping, others appear more essential, conveying feelings through their penetrating gazes. Each figure is based on a drawing by Clarke of himself in the mirror following the serial and violent loss of three people close to him.
