In Music (2 Trees) Peter Doig blends personal memory and experience with art historical references, as well as his deep love of music and the profound impact it has on his practice. The print, based on the painting Music (2 Trees) (2019), is set in a tropical landscape outside of Doig’s Trinidadian home, with the central male figure plucking away at a cuatro — a small guitar favoured in Caribbean folk music — perhaps acting as a tribute to his late Trinidadian artist friend, Embah. The woman perched on a donkey is modelled after the artist’s wife, Parinaz Mogadassi, but also references a mid-19th century watercolour by the Impressionist Camille Pissarro, a painter whom Doig has cited as the direct source of inspiration for several of his works.
