Beatriz González: The Artist Who Defined Colombian Art History
In this HENI talks film, Lotte Johnson curator at Barbican Art Gallery in London, discovers the extraordinary life of Beatriz González, the artist who captured the soul and the struggle of Colombia. From her iconic "dissections" of Western masterpieces to her powerful witness of national tragedy, this film explores how Beatriz González (La Maestra) became one of the most influential figures in Latin American art. We journey through her 60-year career, exploring her vibrant colour palettes, her furniture "interventions", and her commitment to collective memory.
Time Period:
20th century
Lotte Johnson's curatorial practice is characterized by a deep engagement with artistic legacies and their contemporary resonance. Her profound interest in the work of Beatriz González began in 2018, sparked by a major exhibition of González's art in Berlin. This initial encounter laid the groundwork for a long-term curatorial ambition, leading Johnson to envision presenting González's formidable oeuvre within the expansive galleries of the Barbican.
The conceptualization and development of the Barbican exhibition formally commenced in 2024. During this period, Johnson undertook extensive research, which included multiple visits to Bogotá to engage directly with González. These interactions were integral to the exhibition's formation, allowing for a collaborative approach with the artist herself prior to her passing. Johnson's diligent groundwork underscores her commitment to bringing underrepresented yet significant artistic voices to broader audiences.
