The Hockney Interviews

The Hockney Interviews brings together ten expansive conversations between Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director of Serpentine galleries, and David Hockney, one of the most influential artists of our time.

Spanning 16 years (2008–2024), these interviews capture a pivotal chapter in Hockney’s career, revealing how the painter embarked on an exploration of the creative possibilities of digital media – from iPad paintings to immersive audiovisual shows. His reflections touch on everything from his dedicated artistic practice and fervent preoccupation with painting nature to his friendships with Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon, his fascination with new technologies and his unapologetic love of smoking. As bold and varied as his work, Hockney’s musings offer a rare glimpse into the mind of a visionary.

Fully illustrated with iconic artworks from throughout his career, alongside rarely seen portraits of Hockney from the age of eighteen to the present day, this book is an intimate portrait of the artist and an unrivalled insight into his prolific creative world.

Published to coincide with David Hockney 25, the major upcoming exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (opening 9 April – 31 August 2025).
