Memory as a dynamic process has been the underlying theme of Sabine Moritz’s drawings and paintings since the early 1990s. In her work Moritz has captured remembered images from her childhood in the GDR; drawn flower compositions; and in recent years has engaged with the motif of war. This publication presents Moritz’s latest work: a collection of drawings and paintings of helicopters created between 2002 and 2013.
The Helicopter series has arisen from Moritz’s interest in the shift in their symbolic meaning. They are based on images of helicopters from newspapers and television that the artist transferred into her own language. The outcome is a series of beautiful drawings and paintings that range from objective depictions of helicopters to more poetic compositions. The works are accompanied by poems by Adam Zagajewski and Friedrich Holderlin, alongside a text by Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Sabine Moritz is an artist based in Cologne, Germany. Her paintings, works on paper and prints have been widely exhibited in museums throughout Europe, celebrating a distinct practice that combines highly personal approach to abstraction combined with figurative works inspired by documentary photographs, memory and an investigation of genre painting.
As a child Moritz emigrated from East to West Germany, eventually settling with her family in Dusseldorf where she attended the famed Kunstakademie. In Moritz’s hands, personal memories and collective histories are brought to life as she grapples with the beauty inherent in their fallibility and the passing of time.
Hans Ulrich Obrist is a world-renowned curator and the artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London. Alongside his curatorial practice, Obrist has written extensively on and around contemporary art.
