The Dreams

HENI is delighted to present The Dreams by Damien Hirst, a striking new series that features 40 original works on canvas. Merging two of Hirst's most iconic motifs—delicate butterflies and the dynamic colours of his Spin Paintings—these works highlight the tension between natural beauty and mechanised artistic creation.

The paintings are butterflies and household gloss on canvas, and measure 91.4 x 91.4 cm. Each artwork is signed and titled on the verso.

The works are available by application from 27 March 2025. Additional pricing and shipping details will be shared after application.

To coincide with the drop, HENI Editions releases 8 unique prints based on the paintings from The Dreams. The prints are available to purchase until 7 April 2025 at 17:00 BST. Visit HENI Editions.

Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst is a British artist whose name has become synonymous with contemporary art. Since his generative work as a student at Goldsmiths School of Art, Hirst's production has been boundary−redefining in nature. Working primarily in installation, painting, sculpture and drawing, Hirst explores the complex relationships between art, beauty, religion, science, life and death. He constantly returns to his foundational interests and themes, which he reworks to develop an innovative visual language.

"'The Dreams' paintings are chaos and control in perfect balance—like life itself. The butterflies bring the power of fragile beauty, and feel caught in the wild motion of the spinning paint. It’s all about movement, energy, and the randomness of creation, but also somehow they express the wonder of life and the inevitability of change and decay."

About The Dreams

In The Dreams, delicate butterflies appear suspended in motion, juxtaposed against a background of swirling, vibrant colours that seem to explode across the canvas in bold and unpredictable patterns.

Spin painting involves applying paint to a rotating surface, with the resulting pattern determined by colour choice and machine motion. Hirst views the paint's fluid and spontaneous movement as a metaphor for life and the necessity of constant change.

Butterflies are among Hirst’s recurring trademarks, which he describes as a ‘universal trigger’ encompassing love, beauty and the ephemerality of life. Throughout his career, he has created multiple series exploring themes of religion, philosophy, and history through butterfly imagery.
