About Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst is a British artist whose name has become synonymous with contemporary art. Since his generative work as a student at Goldsmiths School of Art, Hirst's production has been boundary−redefining in nature. Working primarily in installation, painting, sculpture and drawing, Hirst explores the complex relationships between art, beauty, religion, science, life and death. He constantly returns to his foundational interests and themes, which he reworks to develop an innovative visual language.

I am excited to present my latest series of paintings – Coast Paintings, Sea Paintings, and Seascapes – at Phillips auction house in London’s Berkeley Square, and to collaborate with HENI. Where the Land Meets the Sea is an exploration inspired by the seaside in grey British winters; I grew up in Leeds in West Yorkshire and often holidayed in Scarborough, Filey, Whitby where Count Dracula landed, Robin Hood’s Bay, and Skegness. I have always spent a lot of time walking and thinking on the beach and watching the sea, witnessing the powerful action of the crashing waves in winter. It gives me a feeling of unimportance and vastness and inevitability, that this whole world and everything in it will eventually wear out to nothing.

Coast Paintings

Editions H13-1 to H13-8 feature works from Damien Hirst’s ’Coast Paintings’ series. Created in 2019, ’Coast Paintings’ are colourful action paintings which convey the energy, excitement and change experienced by the seaside in winter, reflected in the works being named after British coastal locations. The ’Coast Paintings’ began their life as grey canvases which were laid on the floor of Hirst’s studio while he painted his acclaimed Cherry Blossoms series.

Editions H13-1 to H13-4 measure 90 x 120 cm. H13-5 to H13-8 measure 90 x 90 cm. All editions are laminated Giclée prints on aluminium composite panel and are numbered and hand-signed on the label by the artist.

Sea Paintings

The editions H13-9 and H13-11 feature artworks from the ’Sea Paintings’ series. The series captures in photorealistic detail images of coastal storms from across the world, echoing the temperament of the British coastlines that Hirst has observed during winter. Created in 2022, ’Sea Paintings’ is the latest iteration of his 25-year-long effort to perfectly recreate photographs in paint – what he terms ‘Fact Paintings’.

Edition H13-9 measures 90 x 135 cm. Edition H13-11 measures 120 x 90 cm. All editions are laminated Giclée prints on aluminium composite panel and are numbered and hand-signed on the label by the artist.

Seascapes

Editions H13-10 and H13-12 feature works from Damien Hirst’s ’Seascapes’ series. The series join the photorealistic imagery of his ’Sea Paintings’ series with the expressionistic splatters of his ’Coast Paintings’, capturing the scenes and sensations of crashing seas.

Edition H13-10 measures 90 x 135 cm. Edition H13-12 measures 120 x 90 cm. All editions are laminated Giclée prints on aluminium composite panel and are numbered and hand-signed on the label by the artist.
