About Total Surrender

Rendered in a bold graphic style and stark black-and-white contrast, the composition depicts a hooded skeleton riding a horse and emerging from a dense, gestural field of black marks. The result is a striking combination of precise draftsmanship and raw, expressive energy.

Total Surrender brings together some of Lang’s signature motifs, including the skeleton, the horse and his use of handwritten text. The inscription at the top of the work reflects Lang’s longstanding engagement with language and quotations in his work, a defining characteristic already evident in celebrated series such as his The Black Paintings.

Rooted in the spiritual philosophy of the Tao Te Ching, which informs Lang’s daily practice, the Total Surrender image and its inscription together invite viewers to surrender to the natural flow of existence. Beneath the work’s dark imagery lies a message of acceptance at the heart of Lang’s practice: a full embrace of life’s fleeting nature and a willingness to take a chance on oneself. The rider’s journey through a turbulent, shadow-like field thus becomes a meditation on mortality, hope and spiritual release.
