About THESE THOUGHTS MAY DISAPPEAR

THESE THOUGHTS MAY DISAPPEAR centres around two characters that recur in White’s art: Ukulele Joe and Frozen Charlotte. Inspired by chalk statues from the 1940s, White has described the Ukulele Joe and Frozen Charlotte figures as “self-portraits”, noting, “they’re like different avatars of myself and different phases of my life or things that I wanted to be or would like to be.” The collection features twelve total variations rendered across six different paint treatments, from the Ukulele Joe Chrome Robot Model constituting what White called “the ultimate version” of the Ukulele Joe sculptures, to Frozen Charlotte Model which pays homage to the original mended statue.

The Ukulele Joe works take inspiration from decorative statues traditionally found in living rooms. Depicting a well-dressed man slightly hunched over and playing the ukulele, White describes the figure as “my idol...I just want to be this guy”. The Frozen Charlotte sculptures developed out of a carnival prize owned by White; after it fell and its head broke off, he repaired the piece by replacing the head with a skull. This gave birth to a figure that would later evolve into Frozen Charlotte, “a trickster hero up to no good”.

About Jack White

Jack White’s visual practice is significantly shaped by the city of Detroit, where he was born in 1975 – particularly his time in Southwest Detroit and the Cass Corridor – and draws inspiration from the urban environment, mid-century modern furniture designs and the De Stijl and Dada movements. White describes his work as “Hardware Store Art”, a synthesis of carpentry, upholstery, assemblage and reappropriation using materials ranging from resins, paints and epoxies to utilitarian materials and found objects. His sculptures are constructed upward and outward rather than by carving into a material, emphasising addition over reduction while retaining a minimalist approach. Tools and weapons frequently appear encased in epoxy, rendered static and immoveable, whereas handmade axes and hatches sometimes remain portable.

Now based in Nashville, Tennessee, Jack White re-examines the commercialisation of art through the Third Man Records universe, the vinyl-focused independent record label he founded in 2001. From digital graphics and photography to vinyl production and functional audio equipment, White’s practice continues to explore the intersection of art, design and music production.

Throughout his career as a musician, record producer and artist, White has embraced collaborations, including reimagining 1960s guitar amplifiers with Cass Corridor artist Gordon Newton and a mural commission by Robert Sestok for Third Man Records. For the Newport Street Gallery exhibition, Jack White collaborates with Damien Hirst and other artists connected to the Third Man Records universe.
