About Fairey/Hirst: The Hope Paintings

In the Fairey/Hirst: The Hope Paintings print series, Hirst’s iconic Spin Paintings aesthetic merges with Fairey’s intricate graphic style to create four dynamic works. Hirst’s signature technique of releasing paint onto a rotating plane generates exuberant patterns and vibrant colour interactions. These are then overlaid with Fairey’s rigorous, geometric designs, which incorporate universal symbols like a dove or chains, as well as his ubiquitous Obey Star.

The forces of chaos and order play out in the Fairey/Hirst: The Hope Paintings editions, as Hirst’s liberated energy is juxtaposed with Fairey’s controlled precision. Yet these opposing forces are harmonised through echoing patterns. The circle – a universal sign of harmony, unity and balance – appears in Hirst’s original spin disc, and again in Fairey’s mandala and peace forms.

The Fairey/Hirst: The Hope Paintings editions are currently on view at the Triple Trouble exhibition at Newport Street Gallery.

About the artists

Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey is a contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and founder of OBEY Clothing and creative agency Studio Number One. In 1989, while at Rhode Island School of Design studying for his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration, Shepard Fairey created the “Andre the Giant has a Posse” sticker that later evolved into the OBEY GIANT art campaign. In 2008, his portrait of then-Democratic candidate Barack Obama became an internationally recognized emblem of hope. He is known for the “We The People” campaign debuted during the 2017 Women’s Marches worldwide. Fairey has painted nearly 140 public murals, become one of the most sought-after and provocative artists globally, changing the way people converse about art and view the urban landscape.
