About Daffodils

Clarke conceived these works specifically as tapestries, translating the daffodil forms from his original 2019 watercolours into a new medium. For the tapestries, he introduced deep blue and green backgrounds, against which the vibrant yellow petals and slender, tube-like stems come to life. The flowers retain the energy and spontaneity of the original watercolours, created through drips and splatters of paint, appearing alive and active. Clarke described his daffodils as “alphabets of forms”.

Speaking on his daffodils, Clarke wrote, “These pictures for me are joyous and the joy I feel in making them is only rivalled by the joy I feel in sharing them.”

Clarke frequently explored subjects derived from nature in his work, drawing on his love for spring and the English countryside. Since the creation of the daffodil watercolours, the forms have reappeared in Clarke’s work, particularly in stained glass. This includes his monumental stained glass window Concordia, installed at Bahrain International Airport, as well as works at London’s Westminster Coroner’s Court, Chiswick Mall Cottages and autonomous stained glass screens.
